Sourdough Essentials

Sourdough is for the girlies who love accessories. While I’m sure you could skip some of these purchases, I genuinely do believe they make the loaves consistent.

Food Scale: I think this is my number 1 non-negotiable, because I follow recipes by grams. You can guesstimate when cooking, but baking is more of a science - scooping flour provides a different measurement than packing flour, but measuring by grams gives you the exact same result every time.

Banneton Baskets: I use a banneton basket in the cold proofing step - it helps your loaf keep it’s shape without sticking to the sides of a bowl.

Le Creuset Dutch Oven: Hot take! I use a dutch oven instead of a bread oven, I feel like it browns the top/sides/bottom more evenly. I found my Le Creuset at a Home Goods in Daytona Beach and it is my most prized possession.

Cooling Rack: Learn from my mistakes PLS bread must cool on a rack or it will sweat and the bottom will be ruined :)

Disposable Food Cover: I use these over the starter jar when it’s rising, in between stretch and folds and over the banneton basket in the fridge!

Tall Jar: I keep my starter in a mason jar in the fridge, but when feeding to bake I like to use a tall jar that’s flat on the inside (makes clean up so much easier)

Scoring Tool: I like this one because it’s cheap and magnetic, so it can live on the side of our refrigerator!

Sourdough Spatula: Rubber or wood, whichever you prefer! These are tiny enough to use in narrow jars to mix mix mix.
